If you’re considering types of insulation for bringing some warmth to a drafty home or are in the process of building a new residence, you may be wondering which type of spray foam insulation is the best choice for your project.
Open vs. Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation
Polyurethane spray foam insulation comes in two types: open-cell spray foam and closed-cell spray foam insulation. Each comes with some specific advantages.
Closed-cell spray foam insulation is an excellent thermal insulator due to the density of its “closed cells.” Once applied, the rigidity of closed-cell spray foam insulation also protects the building’s racking strength, helping it stay properly aligned. Closed-cell spray foam can be applied in a variety of applications, including basements, since it is an excellent barrier against moisture. Because of its strength once set and its moisture barrier properties, closed-cell foam is frequently used in industrial construction, where it can further support structural integrity, and in areas that see frequent rain, protecting those buildings from moisture and mold growth.
Open-cell spray foam insulation is lighter and more flexible than closed-cell spray foam. It is very useful in blocking sound, giving your home a quiet interior, but since it isn’t as compact as closed-cell foam, open-cell spray foam isn’t as good at structural reinforcement and cannot be used for insulating basements. Despite these limitations, open-cell foam is less expensive than closed-cell spray foam insulation and is a popular choice in residential settings.
